About Us

The Epilepsy Association of Western New York, Inc. (EAWNY) is a nonprofit organization offering professional services to individuals with Epilepsy and/or seizure disorders, their families, and significant others.

Our Mission

The mission of the Epilepsy Association of WNY, Inc. (EAWNY) is to assist individuals and their families in coping with and adjusting to Epilepsy and/or seizure disorders to enable them to lead more independent, productive, and satisfying lives.

The EAWNY was founded in 1947 to address the problem of soldiers returning from World War II, who suffered head injuries and resultant seizures. Also the founders of our organization were parents that were concerned about the community's reaction and acceptance of their children who were experiencing seizures. The goals were then established: to reduce stigma and discrimination, and to enable an understanding of those that were suffering from Epilepsy.

The population the agency serves is divided into two groups. The first group is served by NYS financed programs and are defined as being developmentally disabled (diagnosed prior to age 22). The second group uses services from the United Way / Community financed programs. These persons are diagnosed with Epilepsy after age 22. Other funding is provided by grants, fees, and fundraising.
